Ever since the Everlane Day Market Tote starting popping up in some of my outfit photos, one of the most common questions I have received is ‘How does it compare to the Madewell tote?’ Well, today I’m here to get to the cold, hard facts about these two tote bags. Ok, maybe not that serious but just wanted to share my opinion and the differences between the two.
Madewell Transport Tote // $168
I’ve had two Madewell Transport Totes throughout the years, bought one for my Mom for Christmas and recommend it to all of my friends. It’s the original tote mothership. When I used to travel constantly for work, she would go with me on all my flights and I would CRAM stuff in there. The straps always stayed strong against all that weight and being shoved under the seat in front of me.
I would say I used my first Madewell tote for about three years straight (no joke) before replacing it. The leather does get more buttery and flexible over time (not a bad thing) but the wear and tear of scratches or discoloring on the bottom does start to show up. This might not be the case for the black bag, but it was for the brown.
I love this bag and will probably always have one in my closet. It’s great for both work, weekends and travel. Also, I LOVE that Madewell offers the monogram option if you want to add your initials and make it extra special.
Everlane Day Market Tote // $175
I’ll be honest, seeing Meghan Markle carrying this bag was the impetus of this purchase. She is classic, this bag is classic. I needed it. I love the quality wardrobe staples from Everlane and there was wait-list for this bag for MONTHS. And yes, I waited months because she is beaut.
This bag is a bit more sophisticated and professional looking for the office. It fits my laptop perfectly, carrying it to and from work. I’ve had it for a few months and haven’t changed purses since then. I’m happy to say it’s held up its shape and doesn’t have any scratches to speak of. A positive/negative of this bag – Since it does hold its shape so well (it’s a bit more stiff than the Madewell tote) it doesn’t quite fit into a cubby when I go to yoga. I don’t want to squish it or fold it, so it kind of sticks out of my locker. Small thing, but just something to note.
If you’re contemplating a new tote purchase for fall, you really can’t go wrong with either of these options! If you already own one (or both!) let me know your thoughts below!
Hey! Love your site! I’m so happy I found this post — was just in Madewell going crazy over all the gorgeous fall shoes and wondered about buying the tote. The handles always struck me as so flimsy, so I’m happy to hear your glowing review. But now to decide if I want to pay homage to Megan. Ahh! (I’m a huge Suits fan — and now, The Duchess of Sussex fan !!)
You really can’t go wrong with either bag! I just took my Madewell Tote on my mini-moon and stuffed that thing full on our flight and it’s incredibly sturdy.
But of course, the Everlane bag is perfect too. Just a bit more structured.
Let me know which one you decide on!
