Winter Camel Coat Review

Ever since my recent trip to New York and seeing the inevitable super cool yet effortless street style, I’ve been on the hunt for a camel overcoat/dad coat. I saw them everywhere in the city – thrown over joggers and sneakers, with an all black ensemble or just with jeans a basic white tee. I tried on three different options to see how the fit and warmth compared… Here are my thoughts!

Everlane Italian ReWool Overcoat – Wearing a size 0 – The Winner!

A classic coat with a clean finish you’ll have for years. I was very impressed with this coat, per usual with everything Everlane. Nice thickness and warmth (I wore it over a sweater and a sweatshirt during a 35-45 degree temps), perfect length (hits below my knee), and overall most premium finishes out of all the coats I tried on. Notched collar, double-breasted, front flap pockets. It’s basically the ideal ‘cool girl’ vibe and goes great with everything from jeans and sneakers to black dress pants and a sweater.

Good to note – This coat doesn’t have a zipper. It looks fantastic open over a thick sweater and is warm enough (a nice, heavy fabric) but I don’t know if it would feel too breezy during those sub-zero days without a zipper. You can of course always button it, but not sure you would feel as insulated?

I’m wearing a size 0, as I find Everlane coats to run large. The sleeves on the size 2 were too long for me and the 0 fits perfectly, even over a bulky sweater.

Madewell Estate Cocoon Coat – Wearing a size small

I have Madewell coats from years past that I still wear often, so I wanted to try on this option. The weight of this one isn’t as heavy as the Everlane coat, but probably heavy enough for the colder weather and light enough for a fall evening. The length hit on my low thigh and runs a bit oversized – You can definitely layer a thick sweater underneath.

This coat DOES have a zipper so you can insulate yourself on cold days. This one was a contender, but the oversized square pockets weren’t for me. The color also skews a bit more brown versus a true camel.

J.Crew Cocoon Coat in Italian Stadium-Cloth Wool – Wearing a size 2

This coat has been a J.Crew bestseller for YEARS and I used to have one in a bright flame color a few years ago, so I thought I would like a new one in a more neutral shade. I was surprised the quality just didn’t seem as top notch as years past. Still a very warm coat and love that it has a zipper and funnel neck, but overall I found this one to be the most boxy and unflattering on my body. Actually, it’s a bit more flattering when it’s fully zipper and not draped open.
