How to Help the Victims of Hurricane Dorian

One of the greatest pleasures of living in the Gold Coast is being just a few blocks away from Lake Michigan. When we moved, I didn’t realize just how often I would walk to the lakefront and beach to go for a walk, run or just sit by the water and read. With Hurricane Dorian wreaking havoc on others who live near the water or along the coast, I’ve realize just how lucky I am and living so close to the water shouldn’t be taken for granted. I want to help those whose lives have been turned upside down.

Hurricane Dorian has devastated the Bahamas and ‘thoughts and prayers’ are not enough. If you’re interested in donating a few extra dollars or supplies, here are a couple ways you can help out through organizations working on the ground in the Bahamas…

National Association of the Bahamas // You can donate to relief efforts on their website and there are drop-off locations in Florida for goods such as water bottles, food, clothes and toiletries.

Bahamas Red Cross // They are seeking monetary donations and supplies, such as cleaning supplies and baby clothes.

BAHAMASTRONG // Operated in Miami, they are collecting supplies and donations.

Also, my take on natural disasters and severe climate change… The Amazon rainforest is still on fire. Annual, massive hurricanes are prevalent and have caused warranted global concern. Large corporations are starting to take some action, but I truly believe we have a responsibility and can make an impact as individuals! Shopping sustainably (another reason I love Everlane), being cognizant of your personal waste creation and recycling, how much energy you use in your home… I am NOT an expert or perfect at this by any means, but it’s something I am aware of and passionate about every.single.day.

If you know me personally or just on this blog space, you I work full time as a marketing manager at a plant-based protein food company (and have been vegetarian for 10 years now) and believe the consumption of animal proteins make a huge impact as well. Less meat and beef = less greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. We have to be aware of our impact and footprint at the individual level, as well as a country.

I hope we can unite on something that we can all agree on – We want the future of our planet to be a positive one. Let’s work together to get there. Whatever you can do, I hope this post motivates you to take action and continue the conversation.
