Are Plastic Birks the Sandal of the Season?

I never imagined my most worn pieces of Summer 2020 would be waterproof Birkenstocks, a fanny pack and a face mask. Never ever. But, here we are. This year is weird.

I’m not a stranger to Birkenstock sandals. I’ve had my leather Birks for years (maybe 5 years?!) and LOVE them. Yes, they are a little granola looking, but honestly so comfortable and a classic. They work with my summertime rotation of denim shorts, boyfriend jeans and sundresses. And frankly, they are the #1 sandal I’ve been wearing around my apartment non-stop while working from home when I need a little cushiony arch support. I can’t go barefoot at home all day, every day. These are the perfect sandal to slip on while at home or running an errand.

A couple months ago, I started to see some friends and fellow influencers post about the plastic Birks and was intrigued, since they were supposedly lightweight and under $50! Like a Basic B, I order the white pair which appeared to be sold out in my size everywhere, but I eventually found them at American Eagle, of all places. And they did not disappoint!!

Answering a few questions from Instagram DMs on these magical, lightweight sandals I’ve been wearing on a daily basis…

Do they run true to size? Yep! I am always an 8.5 or 9 in shoes and have mine in a 39 Regular. They fit perfectly and aren’t too wide. You can adjust the straps to hug your foot.

Do they squeak? I haven’t had an issue with them squeaking! I’ve certainly heard from other people that they are squeaky, but I haven’t run into that. Maybe it has to do with the natural arch of your foot? But not squeaky for me, so far!

Do they have cushion? They don’t have a built in layer of cushion, however the arch support kind of forms to your foot which makes them insanely comfortable.

How do you keep them clean? Since they are plastic, you can take soap, water and a rag right to them! I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to buff off a few smudges. (Which is also my trick with white sneakers). You can also use a tiny bit of Comet (for the white ones!) and a brush to get them nice and clean.
