Stuff. Things. I know I’ve mentioned it on the blog once or twice before, but ever since Zak and I moved to Columbus and downsized to a smaller home, we want a lot less of it. Material stuff, that is. It all became even more apparent this past weekend when I had some girlfriends in town and we got into a discussion about shopping, purchasing and purging. Some of us really like things, some of us do not.
Now, don’t get me wrong here. I’m a style blogger, so obviously I do love pretty clothing and I still drool over shoes. (And yes, I get into a deep hole of online shopping…) But since we moved and really cherish the time spent exploring the city and being active, I purge out my wardrobe quite often (probably donating or selling a few things once a month) and wear the things I love more frequently. It’s nice to have less, take care of less and only purchase the items I truly love.
With this new mentality as we were setting up our wedding registry, we really focused on a few larger items that we need (a high end blender, an espresso machine…) rather than filling our home with a plethora of mugs and dishes. Is this the definition of minimalism? Or just the start? Or is it just adulthood? We certainly don’t live in a completely bare apartment; we still have plenty of style and “unnecessary” décor that simply adds color and warmth. Overall, a simple, more minimal lifestyle with less responsibility for “stuff” is the general appeal.
I’d love to know – Do you lean towards minimalism? How often do you purge your closet? Or if not, how do you keep organized?
This is timely! I’m currently in the process of moving and have given away at least half of my belongings. I literally had an entire drawer of black t-shirts. And does one person need thirty coffee mugs? Only the things I absolutely love are coming with me to my new house. Now booties are a different story. I just can’t seem to part with any of them…
