A funny thing happened when I turned 30… (Ok, I just turned 32 last week, but who’s counting…) I started breaking out. I mean, what?! Aren’t you supposed to be well beyond pimples once you hit the ripe age of 3-0?! I guess not. My skin rebelled against my age (and maybe my metabolism too, but that’s a topic for another post) as I started combating both break outs and wrinkles.
My skin has always been sensitive (puberty was fun) and oily prone, but over the past year or two I’ve been tackling wrinkle prevention while battling ZITS. Cool cool cool. I’ll be honest – I went on the oral prescription minocycline before our wedding to ensure I wasn’t dealing with break outs before our big day. It’s not something I wanted to do, but my skin was so all over the place I didn’t want the added stress of a flare up. Being on an oral medication is NOT a long-term solution, so I’ve been determined to make healthy skin swaps to resolve the issue.
Over the past couple of months I’ve completely switched up my routine in order to identify the culprit. I’ve been paying attention to ingredients, I’ve been chugging water like a champ, I’ve been working to minimize dairy in my diet and I’ve been leaning towards cleaner label beauty products. I’ve been determined to find a solution by eliminating toxic ingredients one-by-one.
And what do you think happened? Drumroll please… My skin started improving! Step one – I stopped using the Neutrogena make-up remover face wipes that have been a staple in my bathroom cabinet for the past 10 years. I swear the week after I threw those bad boys out my break outs subsided. I was using those for YEARS and had no idea they were making my face a disaster! I switched to a natural eye make-up remover and voila! SO MUCH BETTER.
Changing up my face wash to the Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser also really helped with the pimple situation and didn’t completely dry out my skin. I also changed up my moisturizer, which was a major win. For years I used the Clinique moisturizing gel because I was worried that using an oil-based moisturizer would be bad for my naturally oily skin. I.WAS.WRONG. I threw that bottle away and switched to a the Beautycounter Adaptive Moisture Lotion that adjusts hydration levels throughout the day. Basically, it’s magic and has all-natural ingredients. I also moisturize with the Balancing Facial Oil which calms and soothes skin.
Another new favorite in my routine is the Rejuvenating Eye Cream – Again it’s NATURAL and has caffeine in it so it really helps perk up any pesky under-eye bags or dark circles. I usually let it soak in and then use my jade roller I talked about in my Amazon purchases post.
So, why am I sharing this? Because maybe you’re a 20 or 30-something woman which is also dealing with unpleasant skin issues. I’m incredibly relieved I’ve started to find a solution for my late-life zit fest. Plus, since I started teaching yoga over a year ago, I’ve been more and more conscious of my overall wellness. It doesn’t feel right to preach about healthy fitness habits, mindfulness, and eating right all while being completely unaware of what I’m putting on my body. I feel better after eating a sweet potato versus a pile of Skittles, so why wouldn’t the same theory apply for my skincare?
I’d love to hear if you’ve made any clean beauty swaps in the comments below!
