Madewell Transport Tote vs. Everlane Day Market Tote

My number one shopping question in 2019 from both readers and friends was “What’s the difference between the Madewell Transport Tote and Everlane Day Market Tote? And which one should I buy??” I actually covered this topic in this post from 2018, but thought after the 20th DM I received with this question I should resurface and update! So, kicking off 2020 by answering your questions and comparing and contrasting the two bags!

I’ve never been a label or bag obsessed gal, but it’s no secret I love these totes and use them almost daily. First up for reference, here’s a snapshot of all the stuff I carry on a regular work day: Laptop, planner, multiple pouches, wallet, sunglasses, phone and I normally have my water bottle as well.

Madewell Transport Tote // $168 (available at Madewell, Nordstrom & Shopbop)

The Transport Tote is the original mothership of tote bags and I frequently see them all over the city slung over girl’s shoulders. I’ve gone through a few of these over the years (I’ve carried a Transport Tote for 10 years now I think?!) and currently have one in saddle and also in black with a zipper.

I love the way this bag looks since it’s a nice balance of casual yet still looks high quality. It holds a TON and you can really stuff it to the brim as a carry-on while still being able to use the straps over your shoulder. I’m convinced you could carry a bowling ball in this bag and the straps wouldn’t break. I’ve pretty much beaten my Transport bags to hell and they just still keep going strong.

The leather is a nice pebbly leather that is pretty buttery and gets smoother with age. It’s important to note that since this leather is more flexibly and buttery, it does get little scuffs more easily, but I think that makes it look cooler and gives even more character. The inside of the bag leather is unfinished/raw and there is one small zipper pocket that I usually throw my keys and air pods into.

Finally, really love that Madewell has the option to monogram their leather goods. My black Transport Tote with the zipper has my initials in gold and I love that little touch.

And now onto the Everlane bag…

Everlane Day Market Tote // $175

The Everlane Tote was consistently sold out for about 6 months after it launched when Meghan Markle was spotted carrying it and it’s certainly a classic, polished tote that would work well in any woman’s closet. It holds a ton of stuff and is made of a durable leather that wipes off easily. If it gets rain drops on it or coffee, you can wipe it off.

It’s a bit stiffer than the Madewell tote and overall a bit more polished looking, so if you’re looking for a more ‘professional’ looking bag than the Everlane tote is probably for you. It also has a small inside pocket as well, but no zipper. It’s also a bit wider than the Madewell tote.

So, which bag is best for you? If you’re looking for a classic bag for everyday that holds a ton of stuff, go with the Madewell Transport Tote! It’s the one I use most. I typically use the zipper Transport Tote for during the week when I’m commuting.

If you need a versatile and polished bag that’s ideal for a work setting or just a pretty, everyday bag that will last for years (and don’t need/want a zipper) than the Everlane Day Market Tote is for you!
