Raise your hand if you’ve organized and decluttered every space of your home during quarantine. (hand flies up). I think I’ve tackled every closet, cabinet and drawer twice now. Luckily, I’ve always loved organization and purging, so it’s quite a fun activity for me. Since we live in a one-bedroom apartment downtown, Zak and I both do a good job of only buying things we love and donating things we haven’t used or worn in over a year. We have definitely embraced a more minimalist mindset.
If you’re working through spring cleaning or decluttering your own space, I would recommend the KonMari method where you take EVERYTHING out of the closet or drawer you’re organizing and move it to one large pile or space to access. I recently did this with my bathroom ‘junk drawer’ of products and realized how many expired bottles and potions I had shoved in the back. Since I have sensitive skin, I tossed out anything old or questionable and brought my everyday eye serums and moisturizers to the front and organized them in these drawer dividers. It’s so satisfying to open the drawer and have my most used products right at the front. I added two of these square baskets under the bathroom sink to organize my hair dryer, styling tools and hair products.
We do not have an “Instagrammable” closet by any means, BUT it’s a nice walk-in closet space and is fairly organized given it houses the wardrobes of two fashion loving individuals. (Does Zak love online shopping as much as I do? Yes, yes he does).
Again, we used the KonMari method with our master closet and brought EVERYTHING out and laid all our clothes on the bed. It’s quite alarming when you see everything in one giant pile. I went through each piece and assessed if I had worn in within the past year or not. If it was beyond a year, I tried it on once more for good measure and usually added to the donate pile. I ended up donating about 15-20% of my wardrobe and created more space in the closet.
The biggest organizational change was adding large drop-front shoe boxes from The Container Store along one wall. We got 20 boxes and have 4 rows of 5 boxes. They are perfect for both Zak and my shoe collection and will fit up to a men’s size 13. They are such an upgrade from those cheap little shoe rack organizers that always seemed to fall apart. We also added a small step stool so I can easily reach folded sweatshirts and pants that sit up on a higher shelf.
Arguably my favorite organizational activity was going through every single piece of jewelry and organizing it within these stackable jewelry boxes. I untangled every necklace, matched each earring with a back and cleaned any tarnished pieces. Can’t say enough about the Stackers jewelry boxes to keep all your pieces organized and clean.
What have you organized during your time at home?? I’d love to know!
