When I first started blogging I had a little side business helping friends and clients purge and clean out their closets. It’s interesting to see the items people hold onto and the reasoning behind it… “Maybe it will come back in style” or “I’m hoping to fit in it again” or the best, “I wore it 9 years ago to a sorority party and it has sentimental value”. (ooooookay).
I clean out my own wardrobe quite frequently, typically once a month, and really only buy or invest in items I truly love and will wear often. So today I’ve pulled together a list of five things to clean out from your closet this spring…
ONE // Items that are too big or too small.
We’ve all held out hope for squeezing back into a dress from college or that top you accidently shrunk in the dryer. But the truth is, you’re not going to feel your best in items that don’t fit you properly. If you have items that are too large, either make a commitment to get them altered or decide to donate. After all, it will free up precious real estate in your closet.
TWO // Impulse, trendy purchases.
Sure, you thought you might embrace the crop top trend or a blouse with fringe, but chances are if you scooped up some impulse buys at H&M, they probably aren’t worth keeping past a season or two. (Remember those baggy and elastic gaucho pants before yoga pants replaced them? Those haven’t come back since 2004. Let them go).
THREE // Anything you haven’t worn in over 8 months.
I feel like eight months gives you all the seasons to wear something. If you haven’t pulled something out of your wardrobe in over six months, ask yourself why. A good question to ask yourself when deciding to purge is “Why I buy this again if I saw it in stores now?” If the answer is no, donate or sell.
FOUR // The same t-shirt in 5 different colors.
I used to be guilty of this… I would find “the perfect t-shirt” and then buy it in every color available. If you have duplicate pieces, narrow it down to two. You most likely only wear a couple of them on the regular anyways.
FIVE // Super worn out shoes.
Favorite shoes tend to be worn often, so if you pull out very-loved shoes from last season, make sure the sole and heel are still intact. If not, do some repair at a local cobbler or invest in a trusty new pair of sandals or flats for spring.
Plus, 6 things to invest in for a pretty capsule wardrobe…
Denim Jacket // White Sundress // Mules // Flat Sandals // Summer Jeans // Draped T-Shirt
