A Casual Update on My Armpits – The Natural Deodorant Brands that Work for Me

Back at the beginning of February (simpler times, am I right?!) I shared a full post on why and how I switched to natural deodorant. I made the switch in November 2019 in order to rid by body of toxins and have noticed over time I’ve been less and less smelly and sweaty. I know, armpit talk is sexy. With so much time spent at home, quarantine might just be the BEST time to switch to a natural product. You can detox your sweat glands without worry of being stinky around your co-workers or friends. Just let those pits be free!

As a reminder, antiperspirants contain aluminum salts that purposefully clog your pores and sweat glands to stop you from sweating. They act like putting a plug in a sink so the water can’t drain. The aluminum salts trap all that bacteria inside. (ew). The worst part of switching to a natural deodorant is that initial purge (meaning, no deodorant for a few days) but over time it gets better and better.

I’ve tried a few brands over the past 5 months and Native Coconut & Vanilla continues to prevail. It hasn’t irritated my skin at all and their formula truly stops the stink. I’ve also tried Humble, which I would argue glides on easier than Native, but I found it didn’t last all day for me. It worked for a few hours and then I needed to reapply. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but I needed to keep a back up in my purse.

Everybody is different so it’s worth trying a few, but Schmidt’s was a strong no-go for me. You have to hold the deodorant stick to your armpit for a minute to ‘warm it up’ before you can apply and I felt the stinkiest on the days I used that brand. BUT, Zak uses Schmidt’s and loves it. Like I said, every chemical make-up is different so another brand may work better for you!

In addition to cleansing your armpits a few times a week with witch hazel, I also discovered it’s helpful to detox your pits once a month. It’s actually quite simple and I wish I had done it sooner. You can purchase the Megababe Detoxifying Mask (I love it) which helps draw out toxins, dirt and oils, resulting in less stinky pits! OR if you have this popular Aztec Clay Face Mask at home, you can use that on your armpits! Just mix with water, apply with a cloth or old make-up brush and leave for 10 minutes. This really helps speed up the detox process.

Have you made the natural deodorant switch yet??
