Is Custom Hair Care Worth It?

Much like skincare, finding the ideal routine for your hair can take some trial and error. So, I was intrigued by the Instagram ads that seemed to be following me (hello effective media targeting!) about Prose custom hair care. I’ve struggled a bit to find the right products and routine since living in Chicago (different water?) so I decided to give it a try.

The process was interesting – You take a thorough survey that asks you everything from your hair type to hair goals to the city you live in to understand the air quality and pollution. Based on the answers it dishes out your results and hair care routine. I was ‘prescribed’ a clarifying shampoo, body boosting conditioner and bi-weekly pre-shampoo mask. When I got to checkout I did hesitate… this stuff is pricey. I think it was about $80 for a 2 month supply which is definitely pricer than my usual shampoo, but I decided to move forward in the name of research.

My first post-shower hair did result in a ton of volume which was great! I was happy with the initial results after styling. But after about a week of my new routine I found my hair got dry and just kind of went back to ‘normal’. No profound results that made me want to shake my hair in slow motion. Honestly, similar results to my regular shampoo and conditioner routine.

For me, the answer is no – custom hair care isn’t worth the price. Perhaps it would be better suited for someone with curly or wavy hair, but for this straight hair gal think I’m best suited to save my money and use my normal products.

So, what are my current products and routine? I’m not incredibly loyal to shampoo brands, but Pureology shampoo and conditioner are currently in the shower. I tend to use Pureology clean volume in the spring and summer and then the hydrate line in the fall and winter. After towel drying my hair, I use a tinyyy amount of hair oil, root spray and then blow dry my hair upside down with a round brush. Once it’s dry, I add a little wave with my Beachwaver (the BEST curling iron in my opinion – I’ve had mine for 3 years) and spritz my roots with Oribe texturizing spray for a lift. Finally I give one last setting spray with either Caviar working hairspray or Kevin Murphy bedroom hairspray.
