Why You Should Start Your New Year’s Resolution Now

We’re eight days away from Christmas and it’s about that time when I want to wear my yoga pants not to actually practice yoga, but because they are stretchy. (amiright?!) It’s the time for snacks and sweets and cocktails 24/7, but I make it a priority to keep my healthy routine and (moderately) healthy diet  throughout the season.  So many people wait until January 1st to start a new workout or get back on track, but that’s why so many New Year’s Resolutions fail. We try to do everything at once.

Research says it takes 21 days to form a new habit, but I would argue it takes longer. When we moved to Chicago, I wanted to start working out first thing in the morning. This goes against every bit of my natural state. I’m not really a morning person. I take a while to actually wake up. I’ve always worked out in the evening. I.want.to.sip.my.coffee. But, I committed to getting up early each morning and heading to a spin class or yoga first thing. At first it was a struggle, but after a few weeks I really started looking forward to getting my day started at the gym.  Now after about 6 weeks, I can’t wait to start my morning with a good sweat.  I feel so accomplished and energized by 8am.

So, if you’re planning to start a new fitness resolution in 2019, I would recommend starting to ease into it now. You don’t have to go full throttle right away, but give yourself the last two weeks of December to establish your new routine or habit so you’ll be excited and ready to go the first of the year!

As the new year approaches, I can’t wait to start teaching yoga again here in the city! It’s always fun to try out new studios and connect with students. I was also just introduced to a new Chicago-based yoga brand, Joriki, that I LOVE not only for their quality apparel but also because a percentage of the proceeds from each sale go to support a charity or organization to fight global poverty. My current favorites are the Guatemala Legging that supports Pencils of Promise and the Chicago Legging, where a percentage of the sale go directly to Girl Forward, the only organization dedicated to creating opportunities for refugee girls who have been resettled in the U.S. from countries around the world.  I love when amazing products are paired with fantastic causes!

  1. Working out first thing in the morning gives me energy and sets up my day for success. I’m lucky to have all the equipment (Keurig included!) I need at home because I know I wouldn’t schlep to a gym. That’s what works for me.

    • Good for you! I need the energy from a group class in the morning to actually get me going. I don’t know if I would have the self-motivation to work out alone, but I’m envious of your home set-up!
