How to Keep Volume in Your Hair on the Most Humid Days

It’s been a minute since I did a beauty post, so I thought it was a bit overdue. The summer weather lately has been both hot and humid. Great weather for throwing on a t-shirt dress, but not ideal for good hair days. If you’re like me and have straight hair that goes limp in the heat, today I wanted to share my routine for keeping volume and life in my strands.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner // Pureology Clean Volume Mist // Wide Tooth Comb
drybar Hair Dryer // drybar Round Brush // Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray // Caviar Working Hair Spray
Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair // Beachwaver Curling Iron

First, I typically use the Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner, which may come as a surprise since it’s, well, hydrating. But I tried a volumizing shampoo and I was almost using too many volumizing and drying products that my hair felt stiff and straw like. So hydrating it is.

After I’m out of the shower, I towel dry my hair and comb through it with a wide tooth comb. Then I spray Pureology mist into my roots, maybe 5 or so squirts throughout my scalp and then rub it in. Sometimes I spray a bit of Bumble & Bumble thickening spray too.

Then I let my hair air dry a bit and eventually dry it with my round brush, really focusing on getting volume at my roots. I will separate the top layers of hair into sections and hold the round brush there for a few seconds with the dryer hitting it.

Once my hair is dry, I do a light spritz with Caviar hairspray (it’s super light and I’ve used it for years) and put a few loose waves in it with the Beachwaver iron. I got my Beachwaver two years ago when it was on sale during Black Friday and it really is the best. It makes wavy hair almost foolproof. I separate my hair into about 10 or so sections and do some loose waves towards the middle to the end.

After I let my waves sit for a moment to lock in the curl, I comb them out with my wide tooth comb once they are cool. This makes them a bit more tousled and loose. Now, the most important part to beating the humidity is dry shampoo. I have been addicted to Oribe for years and have tried countless other dry shampoos, but this one is the BEST. I put about five to six small sprays at different sections of my scalp and then use my comb to kind of tease the root where I sprayed. This really (really) prevents any oil build-up throughout the day and keeps my roots lifted.

Finally, I flip my head over and give it a little shake with a light spray of Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair. It’s the perfect balance of hold and a mildly waxy texture. Plus, it smells great and is the finishing touch.

I feel like the biggest trick to keeping volume in your hair throughout the day is to use dry shampoo and to also have the self-control to not touch your hair 24/7. Give it a little fluff if needed, but avoid running your fingers through it all day. I’d love to know, what are your summer hair secrets?
