My Peloton Bike Review + Proof You Can Fit it in a Small Apartment

It was my goal to publish a comprehensive review of the Peloton bike when I hit 100 rides, but I just looked at my profile yesterday and realized I’m already at 138 rides! Time flies when you’re sweating?

The Peloton bike has been my absolute, no regrets, totally worth it purchase it during our quarantine lifestyle of 2020. I started looking into ordering the bike at the end of March when I realized shelter-in-place was going to be in effect for quite some time. As someone who previously LOVED going to fitness classes multiple times a week, I knew I would be a physical and mental mess without keeping regular work outs as a part of my daily routine.

Delivery + Where To Put It // As I mentioned, I started looking at the bike at the end of March and then mulled it over for a few days because it’s an expensive purchase. Well, everyone had the same idea, because in those 3 days I think the delivery date was pushed out 2 additional weeks! Crazy. So, the total time I waited for delivery was 5 or 6 weeks and it was delivered the first week of May. I’m not up to speed on how the delivery delays are looking these days, but I would be prepared to wait anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks due to demand.

Once the order was placed, the question turned to where to place the bike in our one-bedroom downtown apartment. We selected our apartment based on the amazing location and city views, not because it has ample room to stay at home for months on end of 2020. But alas, here we are. The Peloton placement options were either behind our couch in the living room or in our bedroom. The bedroom wasn’t ideal since I’m often up early taking a class before work and Zak can sleep in a little later. So, we’ve set up a make-shift tiny gym in the space behind the couch with the Peloton, kettle bell, yoga mats and small weights. We’ve just got a full-service club happening in our small apartment at this point! Is it aesthetically how I’d like our living room to look? No, ideally I don’t want a bike sitting there, but the love of taking spin classes on-demand outweighs the aesthetic.

Moral of the story, if you think you don’t have room for one, you probably do! It really doesn’t take up much more space than an over-sized yoga mat, it’s just a matter of moving some things around.

The Price + Frequency of Use // The bike is definitely an investment up front and I debated the purchase. However, as someone who regularly went to Soul Cycle or yoga or Pilates group fitness classes, the cost per class for me is LESS than what I was spending on live classes. (Just don’t do the math… oh dear.) The Peloton versus group classes will pay for itself in no time.

I use the bike almost every single day. I’m in the healthy routine of getting on the bike for a quick 15 or 20 minute class when I get up each morning before logging into work just to help me wake up and become alert. Then most days I’ll hop on for a 30 or 45 minute ride in the evening to get an actual sweaty work out in. I’ve never lacked motivation to get myself on the bike. The endorphins are addicting.

Has It Changed Your Body? // This is one of the top questions I’ve received on Instagram about the Peloton. Has using it changed your body, are you in better shape, have you lost weight? Since I have done spin classes and fitness classes regularly for years, my body hasn’t changed much, but has stayed consistent and stable during a very bizarre 2020. Having a Peloton hasn’t drastically changed how I look or how my clothes fit, but I’m incredibly satisfied that during a year with limited movement and lots of snacking, my weight has stayed the same. Plus as I mentioned, working out is just as much for my mental health as it is physical, and I am beyond grateful to have an escape and enjoy a quality work out while at home.

  1. Thank you for posting this! I have weights and a yoga mat indoors. And, have been getting my cardio outside with walking and biking. I have been thinking about getting a machine but was worried about the clutter. This helps put it in perspective. I feel the same as you. If I get some exercise everyday I feel better overall. It has helped tremendously with the uncertainty in the world. Thank you for your helpful and informative posts!

  2. Thank you for posting. I want to get a peloton but I am curious if it makes noise? I live in a high rise and need to be certain that I do not disturb my neighbors.

    • Hi Tiffany-
If you’re just pedaling it’s perfectly quiet. However if you are taking a class and have the audio up, then you hear the instructors and music. You can use headphones. I will bluetooth my airpods to my peloton if my husband is sleeping in the other room and I want to take a class without disturbing him.
      Hope that helps!

  3. Hello! What size mat do you have and do you feel like you have enough space to ride? I’m hoping a Peleton will fit in my tiny apartment!

  4. What size mat do you have and do you feel like you have enough space to ride? I’m hoping a Peleton will fit in my tiny apartment!

    • Hi Danielle-
I ordered the bike mat from the Peloton store, so it was the mat designed for the bike. We have it tucked behind our couch in a slim space and I feel like I have plenty of room to ride! Ultimately it doesn’t take up that much space.

      Hope that helps!

  5. Thank you for this! It gives me hope I can do this in my tiny NYC apartment. What’s the measurement of the space you have it in behind your couch? Wondering if I’d have the same space…Thanks in advance!

  6. Hi! My peloton is arriving in about two weeks and I’m very torn on where to put it in our small apartment. Do you feel like you have enough space for the arm workouts with the bike behind the couch? That’s my biggest concern at this point

    • Hi Carly-

Good question. I will say if my arms are out completely wide/long with the weights then my right arm will graze the wall. It’s perfectly fine for bicep curls or shoulder presses etc. I just have to modify if it’s a wide arms movement.

      Hope that helps!
